APRN Initial Application Checklist
All Kansas APRN licenses are single-state only!
If you have a current multi-state license from your primary state of residence and you will NOT be moving to Kansas, you only need to apply for the APRN license in Kansas.
If you have a current single-state license in the state you live in, you will need to complete BOTH the RN endorsement application and the APRN application.
Once you have obtained the APRN license in Kansas, prescriptive authority is built into the license. There is not a separate license.
If you have obtained a new specialty, and are already licensed as an APRN in Kansas, you do NOT need to apply for a new license. Please contact your school of nursing and request that official transcripts that reflect the education for the new specialty be sent to KSBN and we can add that new specialty to your existing license.
Do You Have:
- Official transcripts on the way to KSBN?
(Does your program meet the Kansas APRN educational requirements.) - Fingerprints and the background check fee submitted to KSBN?
(If you provided fingerprints to KSBN in the past, a new set is still required for every application.) - Malpractice Insurance Information?
(For this question on the application, you will only need to input the company name and policy number. You do not need to send any additional information to the Board. If you do not have malpractice insurance at the time of application, you are able to skip this question and still apply, however, you will not be licensed until you are able to provide this information. If you need something to obtain employment/malpractice information you can also apply for the temporary permit within your portal.) - National Certification information?
(Your certification must be a KSBN Approved National Certification Organization. The approved KSBN National Certification Organizations are as follows: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), National Board of Certification & Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA), National Certification Corporation (NCC), Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB))
If Applicable:
- If you are the spouse of an active military member, have you downloaded the mail-in application?
(Mail-in application and supporting documents are required. Do not submit online!) - If you have legal history to report, do you have your supporting documentation?
Note:
Pursuant to K.A.R. 60-3-107 (b) applications for licensure while awaiting documentation of qualifications shall be active for 6 months. The expiration date of each application shall be based upon the date of the receipt at the agency. Once the application has expired, each individual seeking licensure shall file a new application along with a new fee as prescribed by K.A.R. 60-4-101
